Understanding the Importance of a Regular Exercise Program
Consistent and careful exercise (physical therapy sessions and on your own) is vital to the health of your new joint. You should receive exercises from a physical therapist at an outpatient facility or at home. Plan for an ongoing home exercise program too.
After each therapy session, ask your therapist to recommend changes to your program that will keep you moving toward goals that will allow you to fully engage in life. Always consult your physician before starting a home exercise program.
It is important to keep to a regular exercise program to maintain the fitness and health of the muscles around the joints. With both your surgeon's and primary care provider's guidance, you should exercise regularly three to four times per week for at least 20–30 minutes. Impact activities (like running) may put too much load on the joint and are not recommended.
