Joint Solutions: Total Knee Replacement

One of the most common causes of knee pain and loss of mobility is the deterioration of the joint’s cartilage due to arthritis or injury. Without cartilage there is no shock absorber between the bones in the joint.

If your knee has been damaged in this way, it may be increasingly difficult for you to perform simple, everyday activities, such as walking, gardening or climbing stairs. You may even begin to feel pain while you are just sitting or lying down.

Total Knee Replacements—Getting You Back On the Go

The Joint Solutions team at Montefiore New Rochelle’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery can help. If non-surgical treatments like medications, physical therapy and using walking supports no longer provide adequate relief, you may want to consider total knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2013, there were 719,000 total knee replacements performed in the United States. Our highly-trained orthopaedic surgeons specialize in this procedure, a safe and effective way to ease pain, correct leg deformity and restore function.

We will consult closely with you to determine whether or not you may be a good candidate for a total knee replacement. We may recommend the procedure if you:

  • Have a knee that has become bowed due to severe arthritis
  • Have such debilitating pain that you find it hard to climb stairs or walk even short distances
  • Frequently require a walker or cane
  • Experience moderate or severe pain while resting, either day or night
  • Have not benefitted sufficiently from more conservative treatments, including anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, lubricating medications, physical therapy or other surgeries

During your initial visit, we will discuss the reasons why knee replacement may, or may not, be right for you. If you opt for the surgery, we will be with your every step of the way—from educational classes pre-surgery to extremely vigilant and coordinated follow up.
